Young Hollywood Awards 
Elle Fanning accepted the Film Actress of the Year award for her film ‘Somewhere’ in a cute Marc by Marc Jacobs ensemble. Francis Ford Coppola presented the award, praising the 13-year-old’s talent and grace. Sofia Coppola was the director of ‘Somewhere’ and she must have been impressed because Francis Ford has now cast her in an upcoming film ‘Twixt Now and Sunrise’. 
This week it officially welcomes winter, but for many of us it’s been feeling pretty chilly for a little while now. The one winter must-have is a great coat (as opposed to a Great Coat—military is a little passé). Unless you have a budget that allows multiple purchases of the same piece, it’s important to look for a coat that will cover you up for every occasion; one you can wear to work, throw over jeans for the weekend, or even wear over a cocktail dress for a night out. Here are three types of coat that will turn up the temperature this winter…
Unlike the camel coat, the trench coat has never gone out of fashion—Burberry should know, it founded a business on the fact. There’s a certain mystique about the trench, thanks to its history as the uniform not just of wartime heroes but also of film noir gumshoes; today you can channel your own air of mystery. Look for a length that hits below the knee—it looks best when it covers the length of your skirt. It also looks chic worn with trousers from wide-legged man-style to slimline cropped numbers. The traditional shades are black and beige, but if you’re looking for something a little more updated, why not look for a trench in grey or even red? 
As mentioned previously, this season’s wardrobe should contain a kaleidoscope of colours—and that can include your coat. The first consideration is that it must suit your hair and skintone, then you need to decide what will work best with the rest of your wardrobe. A bold red makes a strong statement, so you need to back it up with the right attitude—this is not for retiring types. Other colours that will work well include orange, forest, jade or emerald green, and bright or deep blue. And while, as mentioned, it should work back with the rest of your wardrobe, also remember that this season you can also experiment with odd colour combinations—look to last autumn/winter collections from Haider Ackermann, Jaeger, Gucci and Marni for inspiration. 
Jan Logan’s latest jewellery collection takes us back to David Lynch’s seminal film Mulholland Drive. Old-school Hollywood glamour and a sense of duality inform the collection that is heavy on pearls and diamonds. It ranges from simple pearl-and-diamond earrings right through to the spectacular oriental-inspired Laurel necklace featuring jade, diamond, emerald and aquamarine. Particularly beautiful are the Jennifer rings (pictured)—one in diamond, the other in black diamond, that nestle together like a ying and yang motif. That’s a match made in Hollywood heaven.
This is a typically nonchalant look for Miss Chung, and yet another winner. The print dress has a touch of the 1930s about it, which is starting to have a bit of a moment. By unbuttoning the skirt she’s added a little subtle sex appeal. The bag is a great colour that contrasts beautifully with the dress, and its ladylike shape also ties in with the total look. Really, the booties are the only things that bring this into line with current trends.
Kate appears to be channelling Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour and her Yves Saint Laurent black dress with white Peter Pan collar. And at a time when shoes are getting higher and higher, platforms more perilous, colours bolder and shapes, frankly, weirder, how refreshing to embrace a simple pointed stiletto. There’s a lesson to us all here: wear whatever is flattering and makes you comfortable and happy and you will always look stylish, no matter what the rest of the fashion pack is doing. Sermon over.
