Summer Hair Care Tips

Posted: 25 Jun 2011 02:02 AM PDT

Summer Hair Care Tips

It is an open secret that in summer our hair is sorely in need of special summer hair care. Among the main summer hair threats are high summer temperatures, sea water and UV-rays. Head overheating causes hair follicle overheating that can't but lead to hair weakening. Sea water mixed with direct UV-rays makes a terribly harmful cocktail for our hair that causes hair splitting and extreme dryness. Just follow our summer hair care tips and avoid all those 'hair risks'.

• The most important thing about summer hair care is that in hot summertime you are to opt for various moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, as well as hair care remedies containing SPF. Also invest in sun-resisting sprays such as Victoria’s Secret’s Color Protect UV Shield Spray that would help to protect your hair against harmful UV-rays.

• Don't forget of deep moisturizing. Once a week make a moisturizing hair mask.

• There is a lot of harmful dirt that sea water contains and your usual daily shampoo couldn't manage to clean your hair properly. That's why we strongly recommend you to use high-alkaline shampoos once per month to provide your hair with a proper cleansing. But don't forget to apply a hair mask after using this high PH-level shampoo.

• It is better to reject (as far as possible) using hair tools such as hairdryer, hair strengthener and curler as well as perm and hair dying.

• Besides, try to avoid using hair gels and oils prior to going out in direct sunlight. The sun can cause these hair products to heat up, and put your hair at greater risk for drying.

Pippa and Harry Romance Rumours, Kim Kardashian’s Wedding Prep and Justin Bieber Tackled at Macy’s

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 06:03 PM PDT

By Chloe Schneider

There’s no doubt about it, there’s some serious flirting going on between Pippa Middleton and Prince Harry. But is this just a little bit of fun or will a romance blossom between the two? We weigh it up.
Kim Kardashian’s wedding is sure to be a huge affair. We check out what the reality star is doing to prep for her big day.
Yesterday Justin Bieber made an appearance at Macy’s in New York that ended in disaster.

Pippa and Harry
When cheeky Prince Harry ended his best man’s speech with the line, “Pippa, call me,” we immediately knew to keep our eyes on the pair who have undeniable chemistry.
After news that Pippa was officially single emerged, we became even more excited about the possibility of these two getting together and now it has been revealed that the playful pair have nicknames for one another! Pippa calls Harry “Captain” as a reference to his military rank and Harry naughtily refers to Pippa as “Commando” after rumours that the sister of the bride didn’t wear any underwear at the wedding.
This week the pair stepped out for a day of shopping in London together and a royal insider told Grazia magazine, “They speak on the phone all the time and have met up at least five times since the wedding, once for tea at his Clarence House apartments.”
We smell a romance and can’t help but wonder if this is going to cause some jealousy between Pippa and her Princess sister…

Kim Kardashian’s Wedding Prep
The announcement that Kim’s wedding will be a very public affair has not surprised us one bit. The queen of reality is going to have her wedding filmed and aired on the E! Network as a two-hour special. Khloe Kardashian’s wedding was also aired on E! to a huge 3.2 million viewers and it is suspected sister Kim’s nuptials will bring even more viewers.
Given that literally millions will be watching Kim walk down the aisle, we don’t blame her for wanting to be in shape! The star has been sweating it out at Studio City gym in California and has tweeted about her wedding slimdown.
Meanwhile husband Kris Humphries was spotted shopping for suits with Lamar Odom and Scott Disick. The trio of course had a camera crew in tow so we’re sure we’ll get to see all the wedding prep on ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’.

Bieber Beat Up
Justin Bieber made an appearance at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City yesterday to promote his new fragrance ‘Someday’. The fan-loving heartthrob went outside to greet some of the fans who hadn’t made it inside and was attacked by a man! According to other punters, the man leaped over a metal barrier and knocked Bieber to the ground.
A member of the stars security team then tangled with a plainclothes officer in the confusion and was removed from the scene and issued a summons for disorderly conduct!
After all the drama, it was announced that Bieber was uninjured but very shaken up and his rep told People, “This was a momentary, well-intentioned misunderstanding that was quickly resolved and the event went very well.”
It’s not easy being the ultimate teen heartthrob!

 Alexander McQueen Resort 2012

This season of designer resort collections has seen a lot of flirty, floral fashion, but the Alexander McQueen Resort 2012 collection has taken a different approach. While it maintains the elegant femininity that epitomizes the collections of Donna Karan and Diane Von Furstenberg, it adds an element of tough-girl boldness that sets it apart from other high-end collections.

Green: The Color and the Cause Exhibits At The Textile Museum in D.C.

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 10:06 AM PDT

Green is a complex issue as illustrated in this new textile exhibition in Washington, D.C.

There is no doubt that new directions in fiber and textile art are influencing the recent crafting and handwork surge in contemporary fashion. Makers are always swapping ideas between the realms of art and design, so it is inevitable that a collective unconscious of sorts permeates shifting style and color trends. The Textile Museum in Washington, D.C. is on to this creative phenomenon with their latest exhibition, Green: The Color and the Cause, on view through September 11, 2011. This call-to-artists showcase features a diverse spectrum of wall pieces, sculpture, and site-specific projects — all celebrating the role of green as an influencer of rising eco-consciousness as well as a hue that is evocative of change.

Green: The Color and the Cause has unified artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines in conjunction with thirteen textile examples of historical precedents from the museum's own extensive collection. To assemble the group of artists represented, The Textile Museum issued a call for entry to contemporary fiber artists across the country and around the globe. Exhibition co-curators Rebecca A.T. Stevens and Lee Talbot reviewed more than 1,000 works of art submitted by nearly 300 artists. From this group, the co- curators selected 32 contemporary artists—representing 18 U.S. states and 6 countries—to participate in the exhibition.

A Woman of Substance basket coiled from discarded silk blouses by Jackie Abrams (photo: Liz LaVorgna)

Materials and methods featured include the innovative recycling of household textiles and threads, sewing and embroidery, cast papermaking, green typography, as well as a lace vegetation arbor. Several of the show's pieces reference craft and women's work as an indicator that the resourceful use of fabric and cloth bits has always been a natural expression of green as an eco-friendly studio methodology. As an environmental fiber artist, I would never make the claim that women are crafters first and environmentalists second just because they opt to pick up a needle to get the job done. What I do know, is that crafting a green vision is a total process and something that flows between the head and the hands with some serious input from the heart.

Hand-sewn and hand-embroidered ‘Swing Coat’ by Alabama Chanin

Some of my favorite artists and crafters are featured in this exhibit, and one of the most intriguing observations made by designer Natalie Chanin is the irony that true green dye is not any easy thing to produce naturally. "Despite the prevalence of green in nature, no single plant produces a color-fast, deep green dye. Until the invention of synthetic dyes in the nineteenth century, people around the world typically combined indigo blue with various yellow dyes to create green textiles."

Chanin's contribution to the show is a show stopping cotton jersey 'Swing Coat' hand-sewn and hand-embroidered by her team at Alabama Chanin. As the exhibition's curators highlighted: "Incorporating organic and repurposed materials, Alabama Chanin garments are hand-sewn using traditional quilting and stitching techniques by women who live and work near Florence, Alabama. These women, ranging in age from their 20's to their 70's, work together in circles reminiscent of quilting bees to create socially and environmentally responsible fashions."

Treatment?, 2009, hand-painted silk quilt by Linda Gass

The subversive quilting spirit is alive and well in Green: The Color and the Cause, as illustrated by the work of Linda Gass. Her quilted reproduction of an aerial photograph of a water treatment plant on the San Francisco Bay, calls our attention to "the engineering wonders that have made contemporary lifestyles possible, but also questions the wisdom of our long-term strategies for sustainable development."

Estuary: Moods and Modes, 2007, Nancy Cohen (photo: Ed Fausty)

Nancy Cohen's handmade abaca paper sculpture of the ecosystem of coastal New Jersey emulates the ebb and flow of the artist's study of the New Jersey Pine Barrens ecosystem—a million-acre tract of largely undeveloped land in the nation's most densely populated state. Her wild topographical melding of marsh grasses and cast paper is perhaps a more revealing way of conducting an environmental impact study while also creating allure with undulating folds.

Arbor Lace, 2002-2011, live vegetation installation by Michele Brody

One of my personal favorites is artist friend Michele Brody's Arbor Lace (2002-2011) project, an outdoor installation assembled out of synthetic lace, grass seeds, copper pipe and water. Brody has been working with live vegetation in sculpture before green design or eco art became trendy, and her site-specific projects create structures, which she calls "passageways," for both rural and urban dwellers. The grass seed planted in the arbor will sprout, grow, and die in approximately six weeks time. New seed will then be planted and the cycle will begin anew. Brody’s work is the perfect metaphor for understanding the life cycle of textiles and the precious resources required to sustain life and beauty as we desire it.

Gyöngy Laky's ALTERATIONS,  featured on the cover of the New York Times magazine in spring 2008

There is so much visual fodder in Green: The Color and the Cause that the exhibition is obviously something to be experienced more than described. As a participant, celebrated artist Gyöngy Laky humbly shared, "I am interested in making a small dent in changing attitudes about the environment and our relationship to it."

Green as a color and marketing phenomenon is increasingly a part of our daily lives, but for me, the transformative aspect of this hue is the fact that it's deep range urges us to see green in those things that also lie at the other end of the spectrum. Craft, innovation, and renewal is often about taking something seemingly mundane and transforming it into something life supporting and wildly complex. No formula exists and no pattern need be duplicated.

Green: the Color and the Cause is co-curated by Lee Talbot, Associate Curator, Eastern Hemisphere Collections, and Rebecca A.T. Stevens, Consulting Curator, Contemporary Textiles. The exhibition will be on view at The Textile Museum April 16 through September 11, 2011.

WATCH: Giant Octopus Gives Birth to Thousands of Babies

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 10:04 AM PDT

It’s Friday my lovelies, (TGIF!!) and to celebrate this happy day I bring you a truly amazing video which documents a giant Pacific octopus giving birth to what is potentially thousands of tiny babies!

Okay, most birthing videos can get pretty graphic, but this one is rather tame in comparison. As we meet the octopus, who was living in West Seattle of all places, and watch as tiny babies emerge from her den.

It’s pretty amazing footage, shot by YouTube user Seainggreen, and as they point out in the description it is a fascinating event also marked by sadness, as the mother octopus will die shortly after giving birth.

They posted: “A giant pacific octopus mother who lived just across from downtown Seattle had her hatch right under the noses of local divers. Her den was sequestered in Cove Two in West Seattle, in a location that spared her from predators and over-visitation by humans. On September 4 (aka early, early on September 5), 2010, the eggs began hatching. It’s a time of mixed emotion; joy at the hatch, and sadness at the knowledge that this event means the mother’s life will end. The hatch lasted a full week, after which the mother died. Spoiler alert: Best footage comes starting at 3:24. Enjoy!”

Have a look at this unbelievable footage below!
