Eco Style West Vol. 13

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 10:07 PM PDT

Sustainable style news from EcoSalon's West Coast fashion correspondent.

Botanicals In Style – Head to the heavenly-scented UC Botanical Garden at Berkeley for their annual Green Gala this Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 2-5 p.m. This fashion event is a true assault on the senses (I mean that in the best possible way), featuring a sustainable eco-fashion show including EcoSalon favorites Feral Childe, Adie+George and Nicacelly. Curated by Permacouture Institute's Sasha Duerr, the runway show will take place against the stunning backdrop of the Redwood Grove Amphitheater. Local artisan wine and food will be served in the garden amongst the preeminent collection of plants from around the world, and a live and silent auction of items will help raise much-needed funds to support the garden's living collection and educational mission.

Urban Skew – Too cool to spool? Challenging traditional notions of fiber arts, Amy Ahlstrom's Sampled Layers of Meaning: Urban Quilts exhibit at a. Muse gallery in San Francisco is a vibrant show of "ultramodern fiber art, influenced by pop, lowbrow and graffiti art, reflecting the urban experience." Constructed in vivid Dupioni silk and deep black cotton, the quilts are a striking and tactile record of urban imagery and a fraying cultural landscape. Join Ahlstrom for a reception this Thursday, June 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a performance by Conspiracy of Beards.

Man Up – This Father's day, give him the tie he won't expect. San Francisco start-up, Wood Thumb, has created a wood tie made from reclaimed lumber salvaged from construction and demolition sites. Surprisingly lightweight and flexible, the locally handcrafted ties are this year's most enduring (and endearing) fashion accessory for dad.

Kelly Osbourne’s dog dies

Kelly Osbourne was forced to say goodbye to another one of her dogs this week. The Dancing with the Stars alum had to put her Pomeranian puppy Noodles to sleep because of a defect that caused swelling in her brain. “My poor baby girl Noodles is sick. She had a seizure and they don’t know why. I’m taking her to see a specialist two hours away for a brain scan," Osbourne, who is also mom to a Pomeranian named Sid, Tweeted. “Noodles is not going to make it,” Osbourne later wrote. “She was born with a brain defect and I have to put her to sleep today. I’m devastated. I just can’t believe it.” Noodles' death comes almost a year after Osbourne found her Pomeranian Woody dead in her home. Read More: Transworld

You Nguyen Leads a Benetton Renaissance

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 06:07 PM PDT

Benetton gets a new creative director who hopes to strike a balance between fast fashion and luxury.

In the mid-’60s, when the Benetton family introduced the idea of saturated color to the masses, it was that color that would become their trademark. At the time, 30 year-old Luciano Benetton – the eldest of four children – was a salesman in Treviso, Italy, and saw a market for colorful clothes. He sold a younger brother’s bicycle in order to buy his first second-hand knitting machine.

His initial small collection of sweaters received a positive response in local stores in the Veneto region, and soon after he asked his sister and two younger brothers, Gilberto and Carlo, to join him forming the “Benetton Group.” The concept was very cool and shoppers knew from the minute they walked into a Benetton shop, they were part of something strangely revolutionary and fun. Looking back, Benetton might even be credited with the blueprint for fast fashion, with how convenient they made it to energize sullen wardrobes and pick up our spirits in the midst of war and racial chaos that was the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s.

Italian-made Benetton. We loved to wear it, walking proudly into a room, hopefully emulating the high-profile, exotic models of all colors that graced editorial spreads in glossy fashion magazines. When the Benettons created their strategic advertising campaign in 1991, it would be what we all remember, even today as the dawning of a youthful global consciousness – The United Colors of Benetton.

Controversial, albeit racial Benetton, fall 1991 campaign, “The Angel and the Devil”

But what happened? Where did it go? While it may have lost its presence in the U.S., in China, India and Russia over 400 stores have done very well.

The Independent says “Alessandro Benetton, head of the family firm, is banking on Italy’s giant retailer becoming as famous again as it was during the 1980′s and lasting another 40 years.” They’ve given the reins to this new strategy with the appointment of You Nguyen, the former vice president of Levi Strauss, now Benetton’s head of design and merchandising and in charge of everything from fashion to store architecture.

“You is a cosmopolitan and international designer who will be able to take us to the new chapter. The rise of disposable fashion – and many new competitors in an overcrowded market – has meant we have had to evolve further. This is a new chapter for the 46-year-old company – but the book is the same,” Alessandro says.

The Independent writes: “As Mr Nguyen said, who would ever have thought that luxury designers such as Karl Lagerfeld would design ranges for H&M, totally upsetting the market. Instead, he said his vision for Benetton was not fashion per se, but for classic and timeless pieces.”

Here are some of their s/s ’11 looks:

In addition to being committed to global social issues, Benetton has recently taken on initiatives to combat fast fashion by also reducing six hundred tons of plastic in the environment in 2011 implementing 100% biodegradable and recyclable eco hangars this past February. They will be pulling in more organic cotton garments and eco-friendly paper shopping bags, as well.

In the Benetton children’s collections alone, organic cotton already accounts for over 30% of all cotton apparel, and with the spring-summer 2011 collection, organic cotton garments will reach a total of 13 million across the Group’s various brands. These products are all certified according to the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) ethical and environmental criteria, focusing on ethical and environmental sustainability (ensuring that products are GMO-free and come from low-impact farming).

The impact Nguyen could have on Benetton could prove impressive given his significant nod to sustainability introducing Levi’s first organic jeans, and his work promoting quality and a sensitivity to nature towards a younger generation brainwashed by disposable fashion.

Back in 2006, when Nguyen was still with Levi’s and he’d helped to launch the eco jean of the year, he told The Guardian: “The whole organic and sustainable platform is one that is growing,” Nguyen said. “In future, if this is successful we may look at ways of expanding it, but it will never be 100% of the Levi’s product. This is because the availability of organic cotton is limited,” he said. “We are hoping that as a leading player we may be able to persuade producers to grow more.”

Let’s hope he takes the same philosophy to Benetton.

Jennifer Aniston moves Justin in

Jennifer Aniston moves Justin in

Jennifer Aniston

Could it be that after all this time of searching Jennifer Aniston has finally found a love that will stick?  For years America has waited with baited breath for Jennifer to find a man to fill that void that Brad Pitt left behind.  Men have come and gone and then come back again, but will Justin Theroux be the one to cancel out all that unlucky love karma?
Aniston has already started calling Theroux her boyfriend – something she hasn’t done since her on-again, off-again relationship with John Mayer.  Theroux has been seen in such movies as Zoolander and will be in the upcoming movie with Aniston, Wanderlust, and considering  Aniston has been known to fall for several of her co-stars (including Gerald Butler from Bounty Hunter and Jason Bateman from The Switch), this romance seems all the more plausible.
It’s great that the beautiful actress finally seems to be getting her love life back on track, but one could point out that they may be moving too fast even in the celebrity world.  An insider announced “He’s living at her place in L.A.!”  This is a huge step for a couple that just went public with their relationship earlier this month.  Let’s also not forget that it hasn’t been that long since Theroux’s split with his 14 year love interest with costume designer, Heidi Bivens.  The couple lived together for 6 years and she only moved out last weekend.  Is Theroux experiencing empty nest syndrome or is Aniston really the one for him?  Only time will tell…

Alicia Silverstone shared this video of a rottweiler playing with a baby and making him giggle on her blog The Kind Life.

We think it’s pretty adorable too, and definitely TGIF worthy! As Silverstone put it, “I think that animals are the greatest gift to little ones.”

I know how much my nephews love playing with their Siamese cats! Do you have pets that your children love playing with??

Ryan Giggs sues News of the World

Ryan Giggs sues News of the World

Ryan Giggs sues News of the World

(Reuters) – Manchester United star Ryan Giggs has joined a growing list of celebrities suing the News of the World for illegally intercepting their voicemail messages, his lawyers revealed on Thursday.
“Proceedings relating to phone hacking were issued on behalf of Ryan Giggs in the High Court against News Group Newspapers Ltd, the publishers of News of the World, and Glenn Mulcaire,” Giggs’s law firm Schillings said.

Mulcaire is a private detective convicted in 2007 along with the News of the World’s then royal editor for voicemail hacking. The case was closed but was reopened this year after new evidence emerged.
Dozens of actors, politicians and sportspeople including Hollywood star Jude Law are now suing the newspaper, part of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp media empire, for allegedly trawling their phone messages for scandal to sell newspapers.
The affair has cast a shadow over News Corp’s $ 14 billion (8.7 billion pound) attempt to buy the 61 percent of satellite broadcaster BSkyB it does not already own, with critics saying the scandal shows the company is not fit to own more UK media.
News International, parent company of the best-selling Sunday, said it was aware of Giggs’s claim and also said that its Chief Executive Rebekah Brooks had her own voicemail hacked while she was editor of The Sun.
“News International can confirm that Rebekah Brooks was recently shown documents by the police that proved she was a victim of illegal voicemail interception,” the newspaper arm of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp media empire said.
News International said the documents related to a period around 2005 when Brooks, the first female editor of the Sun, was married to actor Ross Kemp, who was famous for playing Grant Mitchell in EastEnders.
Giggs previously obtained a court order banning the reporting of an extra-marital affair.
Other alleged victims of the News of the World’s voicemail hacking include former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, ex-footballer Paul Gascoigne and comedian Steve Coogan.
Actress Sienna Miller, Jude Law’s ex-girlfriend, has accepted 100,000 pounds in damages from News International after the news group admitted liability in a few cases including hers.

Dexter Isaac Tupac murder

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Dexter Isaac Tupac murder

Dexter Isaac has confessed to being involved in the 1994 shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur. Isaac says that he was paid $ 2,500 by music exec "Jimmy Henchman" Rosemond to shoot the 2Pac in the lobby of Quad Studios in New York City. The information comes on the eve of the legendary rapper's 40th birthday,
Isaac, who's currently serving life in prison for numerous offenses including murder and robbery, has to decided to share details on the circumstances surrounding the robbery.

"In 1994, James Rosemond hired me to rob 2Pac Shakur [sic] at the Quad Studio," Isaac said via written statement. "He gave me $ 2,500 plus all the jewelry I took, except for one ring, which he wanted for himself. It was the biggest of the two diamond rings that we took. He said he wanted to put the stone in a new setting for his girlfriend at the time, Cynthia Ried. I still have as proof the chain that we took that night in the robbery."
Dexter says that he was prompted to come clean after becoming infuriated that his former friend went on record to accuse him of being a federal informant. Isaac claims that he never participated in any investigation and was upset that he'd be accused of such a thing. He says that he figured it was time to clear his conscious and pay back the betrayal of his old friend Henchman, who's currently a fugitive.
"I want to apologize to [Tupac Shakur's] family and for the mistake I did for that sucker [Jimmy Henchman]," he said in a statement. "I am trying to clean it up to give [Tupac and Biggie's] mothers some closure."
