Mega Free Wallpapers Updates

If you are having problems viewing the full-sized wallpapers

I only just noticed that (from my PC at least) there seems to be a problem accessing the full-sized pictures on imgbox (the image host). It seems to be a problem with JPEG images only as I was able to open some GIF files uploaded by others, while no JPEGs were accessible.

I’ve emailed the support team at imgbox with details. Hopefully it is just a file permissions problem which can be easily fixed.

Mega Free Wallpapers is moving

I’ve decided to move Mega Free Wallpapers (MFW) back to the free web space provided by my ISP, and to return to using 3rd-party image hosts such as imgbox for the hosting of all of the wallpapers. There are a few reasons for this:

  • 1) MFW’s current web host offers unlimited storage & traffic, however I recently discovered that there is an inode restriction of 250,000 files which MFW is rapidly approaching. There is no way to get around the inode limit aside from buying dedicated hosting (at least $70 per month), which I am not prepared to do. I could set up MFW to not cache preview images and thumbnails, however PHP rendering these pictures every time a page is loaded would cause MFW to exceed its server resource limits, resulting in it being very slow or even inaccessible for much of the time.

  • 2) It was time consuming to upload new images to MFW and then have to manually create an RSS feed post to advise of the update. The self-hosted pics site does not have an effective RSS feed parser to automate this. The software I will be using for the 3rd-party hosted pictures site creates an RSS feed entry automatically whenever a new page is added.

  • 3) I’m not making much money from the current site. I don’t show Google AdSense ads any more as their content rules are too restrictive. A picture of a model wearing tight disco shorts was enough to get a removal request from Google, so I removed Adsense completely. Without AdSense MFW doesn’t earn enough to cover its hosting costs, so shifting to my ISP’s free storage space really is a no-brainer.

Anyway, I’ve started shifting the wallpapers from the old to the new site. I probably won’t finish it all by the time my paid hosting contract ends at the beginning of November, but I will do as much as I can before then. I have a backup of all the wallpapers, so nothing will be lost.
