Stockholm’s Royal Vintage exhibit gives us an inside look at Swedish Royalty.
Most girls dream of someday getting to play dress-up inside the closet of a real-life princess. Perhaps getting to peek into it would be a close second, and that's exactly what a show at the Royal Armory in Stockholm lets us do. Entitled Royal Vintage, it's a showcase of dresses worn by the women of the Swedish royal family, from the early 1900s up until today, with a main focus on the 50s and 60s. Over 70 couture pieces are featured in the exhibit, all displayed according to color. Most of them come from the gilded closets of King Carl XVI Gustaf's mother, Princess Sibylla (who would have been queen had the current king's father not died in a plane crash in 1947, before the crown was passed on to him), and sister, Princess Margareta, Mrs. Ambler.
The dresses are all hand-made, mostly locally in Stockholm by prominent tailoring schools. One of the most respected ones was the Märtha School, named after sewing enthusiast Princess Märtha. Like most tailoring schools at the time, it included a French department with models often sewn from original Parisian patterns. The school founder, Countess Margareta von Schwerin, considered that French fashion led to more economical consumption as the garment lasted for at least three years.
At this time, slow fashion was the only kind of fashion, accessible merely to the privileged elite. Hooks, buttons and closures were all made by hand, although as the times progress, zippers start making appearances. The curators of the exhibit has made durability and eco-conscious thinking a main focus of the show. It's hard not to ponder the fact that these dresses all look as good as new even though some of them are going on 100 years old. One factor may be that they probably weren't worn that many times, but it's clear that a well-made garment does last.
For those interested in seeing more garments from the wardrobes of Swedish royals, it would be worth your time to check out the rest of the armory. Stand-out garments include garb that two kings wore when they were killed, complete with blood-stains that tell the eerie tale, and even a stuffed horse named Streiff, upon which King Gustavus Adophus rode when he met his demise on a Polish battle field in 1632.
Besides an amazing red coat (very 70s-style, which was right, except it was from the 1870s), and the fact that the people seem to have been very short (yes, it seems Swedes were short once upon a time) a few hundred years ago, what I am most enthralled by is the clothing from the early parts of the 1900s, when King Gustav V brought lawn tennis and the whole romantic, English-influenced style that went along with that to these Northern parts of Europe. King Gustav was quite the sharp dresser — he always wore hats, often vests and driving gloves (a garment for each occasion), had enormous feet and, rumor has it, tended to fancy the gents over the ladies. I got to try on one of his hats (or, more likely, a replica), which is about as close to actually playing dress-up in a royal closet as I got.

Rather, as with many well-crafted written works, the key to this neat little pocketbook is also a universal design lesson: namely, that less is more.
It covers overprinting, the golden ratio and papers sizes to start with, then shows sample colors, line weights and examples of different DPIs (dots per inch). File types, monotone, duotone, tritone and so forth are shown side by side for comparison, while different methods of folding are illustrated on a single page. Typefaces, conversions, color tints and legibility issues close out the volume. Even the clever cover shows different dimensions, working as a ruler when the book is closed or open.

Miranda Kerr Lands A svelte and stylish Miranda Kerr landed in Sydney on Wednesday with her gorgeous baby boy, Flynn Bloom, looking healthy and happy in her arms. After a night back on her home turf enjoying the company on her family, it was straight back to model duties for David Jones. The new mum joined David Jones group general manager Sacha Laing at the Elizabeth Street store in celebrating the announcement of sixty new labels being stocked in DJ’s for spring/Summer 11/12. Miranda looked red-hot in a piece from one of the latest labels to be stocked; Lover. She teamed the stunning red lace dress with a pair of platform taupe heels. Some celeb lines are set to be stocked in the department store as well, including Victoria Beckham’s Collection, Kardashian Kollection and Lilly Allen’s Lucy in Disguise line.
Celebs in Fashion New Mum Rachel Zoe has revealed that she is preparing to release a high-end kids clothing line! Zoe’s son Skyler may be only four months old but he already has a huge walk-in closet including custom Missoni and Gucci leather but the celebrity stylist still thinks there are holes in her son’s wardrobe and she’s taken it upon herself to fill them. David Beckham may be enlisting the help of his stylish wife Victoria Beckham for his latest project. The soccer star is getting set to launch a lifestyle brand which will include a new fragrance along with a bodywear range that is set to be stocked in H&M. He has told Women’s Wear Daily, “The final piece in the jigsaw was a retail partner who has the vision and capability to distribute these product globally. In H&M we have found the perfect partner to collaborate with going forward.” Now all we need is for H&M to hit Australian shores!
The Faces of Viva Glam Each year MAC Cosmetics host a Viva Glam campaign to raise money for the MAC AIDS Fund which donates money to AIDS research. Last year edgy songstresses from then and now Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga took the stage and raised $ 34 million for the initiative. Ricky Martin and Nicki Minaj have been named as their successors and news that the campaign was shot by David LaChapelle in Miami this week has hit. We can’t wait to see what this years campaign brings and we certainly hope MAC manages to add a significant amount of money to their wonderful AIDS fund which is in its 17th year!
First there was their charitable collaboration with TOMS shoes. Now, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are taking their charity endeavors a step further by personally giving shoes from TOMS to needy children in Honduras.
According to People, the twins met with children in three communities outside of the capital of Tegucigalpa, where they were joined by volunteers to help fit shoes for children in need, who then received TOMS everyday walking shoes. In classic TOMS “shoe drop” tradition, the sisters physically put shoes on the children themselves. The designers also played soccer with the kids and visited classrooms.
Although Mary-Kate and Ashley haven’t overly publicized the collaboration, earlier this year Mary-Kate did say, “Having the opportunity to be a part of something so meaningful has made the collaboration with TOMS special to everyone at The Row.”
The twins’ shoe line, TOMS + The Row, is available now. The shoes are made of wool, cashmere and leather, and retail for $ 140 – $ 150.
