High Definition: A Bronzed Babe

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 02:07 AM PDT

ColumnQuick tips on how to make bronzer work for you this summer.

I got a letter last week from a High Definition reader, Jessica P. Jessica writes:

“Dear Kristen, I've been loving your articles with all the cool makeup how-to's.  You've written about bronzers a few times and I still feel like I don't really know what I'm doing. I have a medium skin color and some of the bronzers I’ve used seem like they don't show up at all, others are too orangey and streaky.  Is it best to use a matte, cream or powder.  I'm confused. Please help!”

Jessica, this is definitely not the first time I've heard confused over choosing bronzer. Let's start with texture. Cream bronzer melts into the skin, appearing to give you a glow from within, and can easily be applied with either fingers or a brush.  It's great for keeping a hydrated, dewy look on the face, but if it's nearing triple digits, I'd set it with a powder to make sure it doesn't slip away.

Nearly every makeup line has a powdered bronzer, so that can make it even more confusing to decide which one to choose. These bronzers glide on effortlessly with a brush and have more staying power through hot and humid weather than creams. Depending on how matte the finish, they can also offer a dewy look.  Be careful because they don't always blend easily and you don't want to look streaky or overly powdered up.

The Sparkle Factor

The majority of bronzers have some shimmer in them because consumers love their sparkle, even if it's not always the most flattering look on their faces. Often on photo shoots, I start with a matte bronzer and build in the amount of shimmer over it that feels right for the face I'm working on and the overall makeup look we are going for. More shimmer can be a lot of fun for a candlelit summer soiree, but for a more natural look, like at the workplace, keep the sparkle factor to a minimum.

Truly matte bronzers are few and far between, so if that's what you are going for, use a foundation about 2-3 shades darker than your skin tone.  The above photo is an example of how I used a warmer, darker foundation shade on this model to create a tanned and sculpted cheekbone.  There's dewiness to the skin, but it doesn't come from using shimmer.

Not Faking It

The hue of bronze is where it can get trickier, because "tan" for one person could be a totally different type of shade for another and the goal is having that color look realistic. There are two extremes you never want to touch: a shade that is so orange that it looks as if you are cousins with an ompah loompah and a shade that is so cool and muddy that you looked as if you got some dirt on your face.

You said you have a medium skin tone, and now the question is do you have more golden, olive, or pink undertones? That will help determine the hue of bronzer to use. The best way to see which shade complements you best is to compare swatches of the color on your forearm side by side.  Usually that area is more tan than the face and there you'll be able to see very clearly which bronzer comes closest to the shade of your natural tan.

Some of my favorites include:

Revolution Organics (cream, slight shimmer)

Josie Maran (cream, no shimmer)

ZuZu Luxe (powder, slight shimmer)

100% Pure (powder, slight shimmer)

Jane Iredale (powder, very shimmery)

Alima Pure (powder, a variety of finishes)

Once you've settled on your perfected shade of bronze, refer to the High Definition article Tropical Eyes for the exact application technique.

Thanks for reading and asking such a great question!

Hugh Hefner’s Runaway Bride, Green Lantern Premiere and the stars beauty picks

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 02:04 AM PDT

By Chloe Schneider

The ultimate Playboy Hugh Hefner was left at the altar this week and now his fiancée has spoken out about her reasons.
The premiere of Green Lantern in LA saw Blake Lively , Ryan Reynolds and more stars out and looking fabulous.
Finally, we check out which beauty products the stars have been spotted using.

Hugh Hefner Dumped
After years of Holly Madison trying to get Hugh Hefner to marry again, she left him and he proposed to girlfriend Crystal Harris.
Now, we find out the sad news that 25-year-old Crystal has dumped 85-year-old Hef just days before the Saturday wedding.
Rumours have been flying, with sources saying Harris was originally planning on ditching her fiancée at the alter in front of 300 guests and a Lifetime TV crew in hopes of scoring fame and asking $ 500, 000 to tell her story.
There have also been whispers that Harris has been dating Phil McGraw’s son Jordan for several months now behind Hef’s back! Harris’ manager has denied these claims saying, “I have no idea what happened. All I know is that it was an amicable breakup.”
Poor Hef has to see his bride on the cover of every copy of Playboy magazine for the next month as the July issue, just released, has Crystal posing dressed up as her once husband-to-be with the headline, ‘Mrs Crystal Hefner.’

Green Lantern Premieres
Everyone gets excited about a comic book being brought to life on the big screen and the Green Lantern is no exception!
The premiere for the film was a big deal with Ryan Reynolds suiting up in a sharp grey and blue ensemble while his leading lady Blake Lively who a stunning white embellished gown with a sheer skirt. Her long locks, no longer red and looking a pretty, strawberry blonde, were in intricate brads and she donned an impressive array of bangles on her wrist.
Ryan told the LA Times, ‘this is the movie the fans want to see. We are going to deliver.’
Blake Lively promoted the film on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno earlier in the week and spoke about not having a stylist and even gave Jay some style tips. She was as charming as ever and managed to escape questions about Leonardo Di Caprio and the naked photo scandal!
The film opens in Australia in August.

Beauty of the Stars
Sometimes we look at our favourite celebs and think they must have some serious wonder formula to get skin that good. Yes, they can afford the best but every now and then we hear of some of the biggest stars using an affordable product from a brand we love. In the past week we’ve heard about two of our favourite stars picking up products from our favourite brands…
The Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton was spotted purchasing a tub of Nivea Visage Daily Essentials Shine Control Moisturising Day Cream available here in Australia for just $ 12.99!
Meanwhile, Kim Kardashian, whose extensive wedding registry proves she never settles for second best, has confessed her love for the brand Rodial. She uses both the Glamoxy Snake Mask twice a week and the Glamtox Night gel at night. The mask falls in at just $ 80 while the night gel is a clean $ 140. That would have to be one of the least expensive things diva Kim K owns!

Rock Hall of Fame Preserves Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 02:03 AM PDT

You want fries with that?

Lady Gaga‘s infamous ‘meat dress,’ the one she wore to the 2010 MTV music awards last year, has been turned over to the Rock Hall of Fame, which will display the beefy (and controversial) garment to the public. The singer used it as a statement about not being just a ‘piece of meat,’ which didn’t exactly go over well with animal rights activists — as well as other celebrities like Justin Bieber and Courtney Love.

Apparently during the process of ‘processing’ the new exhibit, all the chemicals and drying agents used to preserve the outfit gave the meat a “dark, jerky-like” appearance, so it has been painted to look ‘fresh.’

Time Magazine named it the Best Fashion Statement of 2010, and the Rock Hall of Fame will unveil it as part of the “Women Who Rock: Vision, Passion, Power” exhibit, which runs until February 2012.

Cheryl Cole Ashley Los Angeles

Posted: 17 Jun 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Cheryl Cole Ashley Los Angeles

Cheryl Cole has definitely had some up and downs in the last year and half. Most recently she was axed from US X Factor, which will be debuting in the States this fall. However, it appears that, after picking herself up from that, she isn't going to let it keep her down. In fact, it looks as though she has found the perfect way to move on: planning a luxury tropical holiday with Ashley, her ex-husband?

Cheryl and Ashley got divorced last September after he was revealed by media to have cheated on her with 3 or 4 women. Of course this was after a previous time that she knew about and they worked through. It was believed that she had had enough of antics, and maybe she did for a while. However, it now appears as though she just can't live without him…and he can't live without her.
According to reports from Now magazine this week, the couple is so in love again that they are planning to take an exotic retreat together. Ashley is said to have been by Cheryl's side ever since she was booted from X Factor last month. Right now the footballer is in Los Angeles taking a break with his friends and being photographed with other women. However, the magazine has reported that he and the singer have been planning a getaway to celebrate her 28th birthday at the end of this month.
A source is cited telling Now that Ashley is going to make their holiday a trip one that Cheryl will never forget. He has planned every detail out – down to the Egyptian cotton sheets' 1,000-thread count, which will be in what he plans to be the most luxurious suite. The footballer's trip with his friends has been long-planned. He wanted the singer to go with him, but she couldn't face going back to the city after what happened with X Factor. She told him to enjoy the trip, the insider added, but it wouldn't be surprising if they move the date of their holiday up and meet somewhere such as the Maldives after the LA visit.
Another source confirmed the initial plan, but said Ashley has been sending Cheryl phone picture messages of him in bed by himself, despite being photographed with other women during his LA trip. He's also said to have been telling her that he misses her and is waiting for her. The insider continued that the singer has had a hard time trying to decide whether to go to LA or not after seeing the footballer in photos with other women, and she has cancelled 2 flights. She has booked a 3rd flight and is determined to get on it, they added. Guess we'll see what happens!

Jessica White anger management classes

Jessica White anger management classes

A New York judge has ordered supermodel JESSICA WHITE to enrol in anger management classes for her part in an argument over a cab last year (10).The runway beauty, who has previously dated Sean Penn, was detained by police in October (10) after she allegedly struck Vanessa Kian in the face and pulled her hair during a dispute over a taxi. White twice turned down a plea deal over the misdemeanour assault and harassment charges, and on Wednesday (15Jun11), a Manhattan judge ruled that as long as she stays out of trouble for the next six months, the charges will be thrown out.

White’s lawyer, David Smith, tells the New York Daily News, “Jessica has maintained her innocence from day one and that has not changed. This case will now correctly end in a complete dismissal. Jessica looks forward to moving forward with her career and charity without distraction.”
White was told to pay a £306 fine, while she must also complete three days of community service and two days’ anger management classes.

Consciously Wedded to Style

Posted: 16 Jun 2011 06:06 PM PDT

A curated selection of ethical wedding wear that you'll want to wear for the wedding season and beyond.

Thanks to William and Kate, what the British wear to a wedding is getting a lot of attention as of late. One thing is for sure – we love a good hat. Deservedly considered an art form across the pond, master milliners Stephen Jones and Philip Treacy are household names, (we dare say institutions). Treacy’s fame has now reached epic proportions since he created this notorious hat.

But beyond the battle for the best topper— and that's what's really going on in the pews as Mendelssohn in C major strikes up—the dress code at a wedding has become more formal and restrictive. What this means is, in spite of your best green efforts, you might be considering a rather starchy-looking outfit that will sit in your closet unworn forever. While British weddings have some old time charm, if I had my druthers I'd be an American wedding guest every time.

We have it easy here in comparison. On this side of the pond, we don't have to consider the hullabaloo of hat wearing nor the sleek coiffure they demand. The look is a little less tailored, a little more casual. You can even get away with wearing smart separates thanks in part to the many weddings here that are outdoor and often in the evening. In the U.K., you still can't get legally wedded outside and while weddings can be set at any hour, many like the recent royal nuptials, begin mid-morning (the better to drink all day).

My favorite thing of all about American weddings is that you can wear black. As the color of mourning, it is strictly out of order in the U.K. As someone who dresses like they are permanently on the way to a funeral, it’s exciting I might actually be able to wear what I buy again, let alone incorporate the piece into my regular wardrobe.

With wedding season soon to be in full swing, deciding what to wear is a great excuse to spruce our tee-and-jean-clad selves up, an opportunity to marry color and luxe fabrics, and to leave a single ply, mono-hued wardrobe behind for an evening.

Naturally you'd want to avoid anything too flowy or romantic looking, but this is the time for wearing dresses with feminine details like draping, pleating and ruffles that while in ordinary life seem a little cloying, are perfectly pitched to the ceremony of the occasion.

In the spirit of wardrobe conservation, nix the conventional idea of having to find a bolero, wrap, or some such frippery for your shoulders once it gets chilly. Instead, temper the girlish flounces of your wedding guest look with a mannish vintage jacket—which is such an easy piece to find at a thrift store—and once home will help carry the look into everyday.

Take a look at my sustainable picks, a curated selection of ethical wedding wear that you'll want to wear for the wedding season and beyond.
