How I nearly saved the world from Rupert Murdoch

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 12:47 AM PDT

With all of the discussion about Rupert Murdoch's media organisations News International & News Corp currently taking place due to the News of the World phone hacking scandal, I thought I might finally go public about the morning a decade ago when I nearly did a serious injury (or worse) to the world's most powerful media magnate.

It was back in 2000 when I worked on the call centre's graveyard (overnight) shift at the telecommunications company One.Tel here in Sydney. The previous year I had been the team leader of the shift. After an alcohol-induced incident whilst working during New Year's Eve for the new millennium, my main job in 2000 was to respond to email enquiries from customers.

2000 was also the year that Rupert Murdoch decided to invest a large sum of money in One.Tel, which at the time was a rapidly expanding company in the process of building a 3G mobile (cell) phone network.

My shift usually finished at 8am, but I was one of those workers who was in the regular habit of staying back for a while - sometimes until 10am if I wanted to call customers during business hours. And thus the scene was set for my eventual run-in with Rupert.

At the end of each shift I was required to take printouts of all of my emails & leave them in a tray on the "podium" in the middle of the call centre. The podium was an elevated area where the supervisors sat monitoring the call centre. One morning I was in a rush to catch my bus, so I was half jogging to the podium when suddenly someone yelled out for me to stop. At the time I had my eyes down re-reading an email, and when I looked up, right in front of me was Rupert Murdoch. He was being shown around our office by senior management, and if someone had not told me to stop, I would have barreled straight into the old man.

Now I am only 5'3" tall, but I was still surprised by just how small Rupert Murdoch was. He seemed much smaller than me, and if I had crashed into him at the pace I been moving at, I very likely would have knocked the old man over. If he had stumbled & hit his head on the corner of one of the large work desks (called pods as each seated 8 staff), then poor Rupert could have been quite seriously injured or even killed. Fortunately for him (and my career) the collision was averted at the last moment.

Strangely, I can't much of remember my immediate reaction to nearly knocking Rupert Murdoch over. I think I got so flustered that I just mumbled a quick apology, left the emails at the podium (where a couple of wide-eyed supervisors were staring at me in amazement), and rapidly bolted for the lift (elevator).

I have often thought over the past decade about whether it would have been a good or bad thing if I had not stopped, and had knocked him over. Whilst I never wish injury on someone, I sometimes feel that I would have been helping democracy in many countries by removing Mr Murdoch's stranglehold on the media. I guess I can only hypothesize about that now.

An interesting note too is that this incident was not the first time I had met Rupert Murdoch. My father grew up in the town of Yass in New South Wales' Riverina district, and he had been good friends with the man who one day would be the caretaker at Murdoch's rural property "Cavan" which is located just south of Yass. We used to go camping there in the 1970's, and the spot we camped at beside the Murrumbidgee River appeared to me to be exactly the same spot where Rupert's son Lachlan & Australian model Sarah O'Hare married in 1999. Dad says that Rupert was staying at his property during one of our camping trips, and he stopped by to chat with us. I can't recall that meeting at all, but back then I didn't even know that he was someone important, so there wasn't any reason to store the memory away.

So, that's how I nearly bowled Rupert over & nearly saved democracy in the UK, USA & Australia from his rabid right-wing media influence.

Thanks for taking the time to read my reminiscence.

The fire staarted during one of Rihanna’s gigs in Dallason July 8th, 2011. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished before the arrival of the fire brigade, but unfortunately for the fans, the concert was canceled and there shall be no refunds for the tickets. Rihanna’s tour continues with Atlanta, Long Island, Boston and Philadelphia. So after this incident, Rihanna can finally say she really does set fire to the stage! It just so happens that the fire was started after a pyrotechnic set a a spotlight operator’s chair on fire as he sat up, the crew member was standing 25 feet above ground on a light grid and he got up immediately. Lady Gaga Takes Darlinghurst
Lady Gaga is never short of surprises. The ‘Born this Way’ singer made her Sydney fans year with two unscheduled performances in Sydney’s Darlinghurst last night.
After not-so-subtle hints were left in a tweet from Gaga saying “Thinking of going out in Sydney tonight. How I wish we had a show. NEVERMIND, don’t listen to me. Maybe I’ll just go for a walk in the pARQ,” fans rushed to the two Oxford Street clubs Arq and Nevermind in hopes of getting a glimpse of the star.
The mother monster took the stages after 12am and performed hit tracks ‘Born this Way’, ‘Judas’ and ‘The Edge of Glory’.
She wore black gloves, a police-like hat, a multi-coloured top and sunglasses. Her face was pale white and her hair blue and she told the crowd Clover Moore had made her an honorary citizen, saying, “And on my citizenship certificate she said it was because of my gay rights activism. So I just wanted to thank you all for being so f***ing gay.”
Gaga’s official performance is taking place tomorrow tonight at Town Hall.

Rihanna for Emporio Armani
Last week Rihanna hinted at a collaboration with Armani via her twitter saying, “U would NEVER guess what I’m doing right now!!! Hint Hint #Armani” and now the brand have confirmed it.
The seriously hot star is set to be the new global testimonial for Emporio Armani Underwear and Armani Jeans for the Autumn/Winter 2011-12 campaigns.
Set to launch in September, the 23-year-old shot the images in New York. She follows in the footsteps of mega-watt stars such as Megan Fox, Rafael Nadal, David Beckham and Victoria Beckham all of whom have represented the brand in campaigns recently.
We can’t wait to see the sure to be super sexy shots!

Mila Kunis’ Blind Date
US Marine Sgt Scott Moore has just landed a dream date with the stunning Mila Kunis. After posting a video on YouTube saying, “Hi Mila, I just wanted to take a moment out of my day to invite you to the Marine Corps Ball with your truly. So take a second to think about it and get back to me. All right, bye now.”
The ‘Friends with Benefits’ star was convinced to say yes by co-star Justin Timberlake who said, “Have you seen this? Have you heard about this? You need to do it for your country,” prompting Kunis to check with her publicist then go ahead and accept the date.
The Marine Corps Ball is scheduled for November 18th and will take place in North Carolina.

Selena Gomez Gets Tex-Mex with a Poncho

Posted: 12 Jul 2011 02:03 AM PDT

Selena Gomez seems to be enjoying her Tex-Mex fashion trend while on a night out with friens, but unfortunately she doesn’t look good with the said outfit. Why? We have a long list of reasons.

The teen titan, who also happens to be Justin Bieber’s lady love, looks a bit older in that brown plain poncho. It was able to accentuate her youth, or her cute face. The big earring she paired with her poncho also do not work well, as they made her ears look stretched. If there’s anything we like about her in that look, that would be her black skirt, but then again, it’s too matronly for her age.

Thanks for the Wrap Dress DVF, But It’s Hardly Liberating

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 06:04 PM PDT

Is the wrap dress really that flattering and easy to wear?

So iconic is designer Diane von Fürstenberg’s famed wrap dress, it holds a place in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Introduced in 1972 by von Fürstenberg, the wrap dress achieved peak popularity in the mid to late 1970s. The Met summarizes: “Its fundamental form was already deeply embedded in the American designer sportswear tradition; a new woman designer translated the style into 1970s fabrics and colors, generally brighter, bolder, and more synthetic (and stretchy) than the early examples to which the silhouette and design principle are indebted.”

A DVF wrap dress was the first designer piece Shannon Lorraine, owner of New York sustainable designer showroom FoundFuture, aspired to own. “It felt like a coming of age thing, silly but true. Plus, if your boobs fall out a bit, it’s just part of the sexy allure of the dress,” says Lorraine.

Lorraine is not alone in her enduring love for the dress.

“The popular design, which began a women's fashion trend due to its revolutionary versatility, is notable for its dual status as comfortable business wear and elegant evening dress,” reads one biography. “Suitable for the changing roles of busy urban women in the 70s, the dress became a sensation and Fürstenberg sold over five million of them before market saturation and over-exposure killed its popularity while new trends took over the 80s.”

I say, while the versatile design has been credited as a symbol of the ’70s women’s liberation movement, and touted as a dress that looks amazing on any body type, the wrap dress actually has many faults and challenges. Warning: we’re about to commit fashion blasphemy.

As a former fashion boutique owner and rep for many sustainable designers over the years, I have observed that while the shape can work with many different body types, accentuating the waist and cleavage, it  can also be problematic for those same reasons. What if you have too much or too little of both? Too little decolletage and the neckline falls open to show your bra, too much and depending on your age, too much is either liable to get you marked with the dreaded c-word (that’s cougar), or, well, undeniably going to show your age.

As for the silhouette, slight frames can get lost in it, appearing to be all elbows and knees. Bigger girls might be glad for the flattering coverage of the legs a miniskirt can’t offer, but in emphasizing the waist, the wrap dress also puts the belly on full display. If you’ve had kids and the pooch that comes with them, you’ll be reaching for your Spanx girdle to look good in the wrap.

Oh, but there’s more. The other flawed feature of the wrap dress is the skirt. Given the slightest breeze, the wrapped opening whisks apart to show the world panties, control top hose, Spanx or maybe, that you simply like to go commando. (Hardly a revolutionary or liberating way to show the world that you’re tough as nails.)

Ask all your friends if they have a wrap dress and see if they actually wear it. I bet you they will all have a reason why they do not.

Mountains of the Moon’s Audrey Wrap

The wrap dress winner for me and my former boutique customers is this organic cotton, faux wrap called the Audrey Dress from Mountains of the Moon. The dress features a cut on the bias skirt that won’t blow open and a faux wrap top. The 3/4 sleeves also make this a great choice for women who dislike their upper arms.

But perhaps you’re a wrap-a-holic who cares little for this slanderous DVF talk.

For you, I offer the Wrap Shop at DVF and these sustainable takes on the original:
