Young Hollywood Awards and Katie Holmes’ at Drama Desk Awards

Posted: 30 May 2011 02:04 AM PDT

By Chloe Schneider

Awards season feels like it’s never going to end and we couldn’t be happier about it! Today we’ve got the big stories from the Young Hollywood Awards and Drama Desk Awards.

Katie Holmes Presents at Drama Desk Awards
The Drama Desk Awards is a less commonly known awards ceremony that honours outstanding work on Broadway, off-Broadway and non-profit New York theatre. This year marked the 56th annual awards and was held at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.
32-year-old Katie Holmes presented the ceremony, wearing a top and skirt from her own Holmes and Yang collection. The bright fuchsia silk crepe de chine top and matching long, pleated skirt looked absolutely divine on the star.
Between the fun colour choice, her relaxed hairstyle and glowing make-up, Katie appeared vibrant and full of confidence; just how we like to see her!

Young Hollywood Awards
LA’s Club Nokia played host to the Young Hollywood Awards ceremony, an annual event now in it’s 13th year that celebrates the achievements and performances of Hollywoods up-and-comers.

‘True Grit’s’ Hailee Stanfield took out the Breakthrough of the Year award which was awarded to her by co-star Jeff Bridges. The star wore a head-to-toe Miu Miu in a grown-up white blouse paired with a black skirt and some glittery pumps.
The ‘Pretty Little Liars’ girls were awarded the ‘Cast to Watch’ award by The Vampire Diaries’ Kat Graham who received last years award. All the girls looked absolutely incredible on the night in their designer gear.

Elle Fanning accepted the Film Actress of the Year award for her film ‘Somewhere’ in a cute Marc by Marc Jacobs ensemble. Francis Ford Coppola presented the award, praising the 13-year-old’s talent and grace. Sofia Coppola was the director of ‘Somewhere’ and she must have been impressed because Francis Ford has now cast her in an upcoming film ‘Twixt Now and Sunrise’.

Our own Isabel Lucas picked up the Star of Tomorrow Female award after walking the red carpet in a truly amazing boho style lace Ralph Lauren dress from the Spring RTW 2011 collection.

Aimee Teegarden of ‘Friday Night Lights’ fame was another big winner on the night, taking home the TV Actress of the Year. The award for TV Actor of the Year went to Jesse Williams from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’.

Camilla Belle proved she was a well-deserving winner of the Young Hollywood Style Icon award in an incredible white Tom Ford suit! The 24-year-old certainly does have a daring sense of style and we think she was a very worthy winner.

The night was overall a huge success, proving that the future of Hollywood is in very good hands.

Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash On This Winter’s Best Coats, Jan Logan’s Film-Inspired Collection And Kate Moss’s Belle De Jour Moment

Posted: 30 May 2011 02:04 AM PDT

This week it officially welcomes winter, but for many of us it’s been feeling pretty chilly for a little while now. The one winter must-have is a great coat (as opposed to a Great Coat—military is a little passé). Unless you have a budget that allows multiple purchases of the same piece, it’s important to look for a coat that will cover you up for every occasion; one you can wear to work, throw over jeans for the weekend, or even wear over a cocktail dress for a night out. Here are three types of coat that will turn up the temperature this winter…

Camel Coat

This classic coat has been banished to the wilderness for some time now, but with the return to minimalism and neutral shades in recent seasons its time has come again. This isn’t beige—think literally the colour of a camel, anywhere from a golden blonde through to a deeper toffee tone. (And yes, originally camel coats were originally made from camel hair, which is especially warm but still lightweight; today they can just as easily be made from camel-coloured wool.) It suggests wealth (never a bad thing) and it is indeed a good investment given its versatility. It works a treat with black, white, grey or navy, so all the fellow neutrals are covered. Moreover, it also works with this season’s brights, such as red, orange, Klein blue and even fuchsia. It doesn’t really matter what style you choose—you could find a wrap style, button-front or pea coat—it’s more about embracing this long-lost colour.

Trench Coat

Unlike the camel coat, the trench coat has never gone out of fashion—Burberry should know, it founded a business on the fact. There’s a certain mystique about the trench, thanks to its history as the uniform not just of wartime heroes but also of film noir gumshoes; today you can channel your own air of mystery. Look for a length that hits below the knee—it looks best when it covers the length of your skirt. It also looks chic worn with trousers from wide-legged man-style to slimline cropped numbers. The traditional shades are black and beige, but if you’re looking for something a little more updated, why not look for a trench in grey or even red?

Colourful Coats

As mentioned previously, this season’s wardrobe should contain a kaleidoscope of colours—and that can include your coat. The first consideration is that it must suit your hair and skintone, then you need to decide what will work best with the rest of your wardrobe. A bold red makes a strong statement, so you need to back it up with the right attitude—this is not for retiring types. Other colours that will work well include orange, forest, jade or emerald green, and bright or deep blue. And while, as mentioned, it should work back with the rest of your wardrobe, also remember that this season you can also experiment with odd colour combinations—look to last autumn/winter collections from Haider Ackermann, Jaeger, Gucci and Marni for inspiration.

Logan’s Drive

Jan Logan’s latest jewellery collection takes us back to David Lynch’s seminal film Mulholland Drive. Old-school Hollywood glamour and a sense of duality inform the collection that is heavy on pearls and diamonds. It ranges from simple pearl-and-diamond earrings right through to the spectacular oriental-inspired Laurel necklace featuring jade, diamond, emerald and aquamarine. Particularly beautiful are the Jennifer rings (pictured)—one in diamond, the other in black diamond, that nestle together like a ying and yang motif. That’s a match made in Hollywood heaven.

Alexa Chung

This is a typically nonchalant look for Miss Chung, and yet another winner. The print dress has a touch of the 1930s about it, which is starting to have a bit of a moment. By unbuttoning the skirt she’s added a little subtle sex appeal. The bag is a great colour that contrasts beautifully with the dress, and its ladylike shape also ties in with the total look. Really, the booties are the only things that bring this into line with current trends.

Kate Moss

Kate appears to be channelling Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour and her Yves Saint Laurent black dress with white Peter Pan collar. And at a time when shoes are getting higher and higher, platforms more perilous, colours bolder and shapes, frankly, weirder, how refreshing to embrace a simple pointed stiletto. There’s a lesson to us all here: wear whatever is flattering and makes you comfortable and happy and you will always look stylish, no matter what the rest of the fashion pack is doing. Sermon over.

Architect Barbie Doll Comes with Dream House (But No Job)

Posted: 29 May 2011 06:04 PM PDT

The timing is a bit awkward for Mattel and the American Institute of Architects, or perhaps appropriate – many in the field are frustrated by the lack of employment during this economic downturn. But Barbie still smiles, as she always does.

In conjunction with the release of this curious new designer-themed doll, the AIA is also hosting a Dream House competition – in addition to the pink prop miniature home included with purchase.

As the professional-variety Barbies do, this one comes with other tools of the trade, including a set of blueprints and a hardhat plus the ever-popular thick black glasses anyone in the industry should be familiar with.

High heals may be a bit tough when out surveying a site, however, and some of the Dream Home criteria seem overly fabulous for this post-housing-boom, but perhaps this is all a bit too cynical an analysis for a childrens’ toy.

Brad Pitt considering marriage

Posted: 29 May 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Brad Pitt considering marriage

In the past, 47-year-old Pitt and 35-year-old Jolie said they wouldn’t marry until gay couples could do so legally, but that could be about to change.
Pitt – who raises adopted children Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, Zahra, 6, and his biological kids Shiloh, 5 and twins Knox and Vivienne, 2  with Jolie – confessed that the brood would like them to tie the knot.

He said: ‘The kids ask about marriage. It's meaning more and more to them.

‘So it's something we've got to look at.’

The long-time lovers still enjoy an active sex life – and Brad says they are completely honest about it with their kids.

He revealed: ‘We tell the kids, “Mum and dad are going off to kiss.” They go, “Eww, gross!” But we demand it.’

Pitt began dating Angelina in 2005, shortly after he split from his first wife Jennifer Aniston.

The father of six says he and his film star wife try to give their children a normal upbringing.

He said: ‘Angie and I do everything we can to carve out some semblance of normalcy for them, to recreate the kinds of moments that were special for us.

‘It's not unusual for the kids to be covered in paint. We have mud fights. It's chaos from morning until the lights go out.’

Pitt’s most recent film The Tree Of Life, in which he plays a sometimes abusive father, received mixed reviews at the Cannes Film Festival.

But the actor told US Weekly: ‘I certainly don’t raise my kids the same way [as my character does].
‘I am painfully aware that my actions leave an indelible mark on them in these formidable years.’

Empty Zones

Posted: 29 May 2011 06:02 AM PDT

The Collective Actions group will make an installation for the Russian Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale.

Empty Zones is the concept of life as a unique kind of artwork. And this life in art will be demonstrated through using the metaphors created for the Russian Pavilion space.

The Collective Actions group members are Nikita Alexeev, Elena Elagina, Georgy Kizevalter, Igor Makarevich, Andrei Monastyrski, Nikolai Panitkov, Sergei Romashko, and Sabine Hänsgen.

The Russian Pavilion will host an attempt to view CA's actions retrospectively as life in art.

The exhibition will show art as the production of oneself rather than of objects (paintings, sculptures, installations).

Opening on June 2nd.
