Exhibiting The New Fashion

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:03 AM PDT

What kind of clothing will our children be looking at in museums in the future?

When I'm in London, my first stop is always the Victoria and Albert museum in Kensington. It houses the world’s best costume collection. Over the years I've collectively spent weeks in there, my nose quite literally pressed up against the glass, eyes hungering over panniers, whalebones and crinolettes.

Dress history is the best kind of history to me. Imagining a fellow human, the living breathing body beneath the layers, provides a very direct link from the past to the present. Visiting the First Ladies inaugural dress exhibit at the Smithsonian last month, Jacqueline Kennedy seemed bigger than I'd imagined, Hillary Clinton smaller. Small details for sure, but nonetheless they are details our minds like to inexplicably linger upon.

With the world-class Balenciaga exhibit at San Francisco's De Young museum wrapping up last weekend, the Jean Paul Gaultier retrospective opening at Montreal's Museum of Fine Arts and the decision to extend the Met's simply stunning Alexander McQueen "Savage Beauty" show due to record breaking numbers of attendees—clearly the passion for past fashion is striking a chord.

“Fashion exhibitions are thus the height of fashion,” wrote Suzy Menkes for the New York Times earlier this week on the growing trend of high production, money-spinning fashion exhibits. “The explosion of museum exhibitions is only a mirror image of what has happened to fashion itself this millennium. With the force of technology, instant images and global participation, fashion has developed from being a passion for a few to a fascination — and an entertainment — for everybody."

Has the availability of mass-market fashion made us look at and appreciate fashion beyond the immediate trends to analyze changing style in a social context? Or perhaps the values of creativity, custom design and hand production that we so admire in the work of the great designers, deliver greater rewards than our desire for cheap clothing?

You'd think that the kind of clothing, bourgeois and haute couture, shown in museums would be alienating for the majority of us t-shirt and jean wearers. And yet the growing popularity of clothing exhibitions is testament to interest beyond our need simply for clothes.

The great Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer once said that nothing is design until ordinary people use it. People around the world want to enjoy an aesthetic quality in their everyday lives. The worry is whether our desire for an aesthetic translates to design that is meaningful beyond an act of consumption.

Cristóbal Balenciaga at the de Young Museum in San Francisco

I guess the big question is what kind of clothing will our children be looking at in museums in the future?  When I see clothing at fashion exhibits like the Balenciaga show I saw recently, I'm reminded of the ethical couture created by the green designers I cover. Like "the Picasso of fashion," Cristóbal Balenciaga, they are personally invested in their designs, committed to supporting local craftsmanship and the production of handmade materials. It's fashion that's not created from fickle top-down design trends but rather from the visionary spirits of designers who claim the earth's future through clothing.

7 Favorite Green Sunscreens for Summer

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:07 PM PDT

Are organic sunscreens comparable in quality to their non-organic equivalents?

Does an organic sunscreen work? Don't I want the highest SPF possible? Will I burn more easily if I use a green sunscreen? Sometimes it seems like organic sunscreen is just one giant enigma surrounded by a sea of chemical rumors. But the truth is out there. Yes, sunscreens containing organic ingredients are as effective as others. You will not burn more easily with a green sunscreen, (unless you don't apply it correctly), and there is no evidence that any SPF higher than 50+ works better than others.

In fact, green sunscreens work really well. To celebrate this fact, we asked several of our green comrades to share their favorite eco-friendly sunscreen.

Episencial Sunny Sunscreen SPF 35 ($ 14.99)
Anna Getty, author and green living expert, recommends Episencial Sunny Sunscreen SFP 35. Another top-rated product from Skin Deep, this product uses natural minerals like zinc and titanium with no harmful nanoparticles. It's also fortified with organic green tea, as well as organic sesame, safflower and avocado oils.

Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30+ ($ 25.95)
Aysia Wright of Chartreuse PR is a Devita Solar devotee. As Aysia tells me, "It's great for everyday use." This product received a #1 rating from the Skin Deep database, offering full spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection with a SPF of 30+. Best of all, it goes on extremely light and is virtually free of any sticky residues.

Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm, SPF 15 ($ 29.70)
What does Laura Klein slather on her face? The founder and publisher of Organic Authority shares, "My preferred sunscreen is a hat, long sleeves, and glasses. But when I use sunscreen, it's Miessence Reflect Outdoor Balm." This product, which scores a rating of #2 from Skin Deep, does not contain any nanoparticles. Further, it creates a physical sun block that bounces the sun's rays off of your skin, unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb rays.

Badger Balm 30+ Lightly Scented Lavender Sunscreen ($ 16.00)
Kristen Arnett, makeup artist, Ecosalon columnist, and the founder of Green Beauty Team, recommends this sunscreen for both face and body.
As she tells me, "It does go on rather white, but it’s safe, natural, works well, and lasts for quite a long time. It also doesn’t clog pores and is very hydrating." This sunscreen also gets a #1 ranking from the Skin Deep database.

COOLA Face SPF 30 Matte Finish Cucumber Natural Mineral Sun block ($ 36.00)
We've made no secret that we're big fans of COOLA here at Ecosalon. But we're not the only ones. Another admirer of the brand includes Melissa Tournay, green beauty expert and co-owner of Primrose Organics Salon and Boutique in Los Angeles. This product, which rates a #2 from Skin Deep, is 95% natural with 70% certified organic inactives.

Jurlique Sun Lotion SPF 30+ ($ 20.00)
Our fearless leader here at EcoSalon, EIC Sara Ost, loves this product from Jurlique. As she tells me, "I adore Jurlique’s products, which are biodynamic. They just smell amazing, and their sun block is nice because it isn’t oily or greasy." An Australian company, Jurlique is certified under different standards and does not fare as well in the Skin Deep database. However, along with biodynamic principles, the company does employ several sustainable initiatives.

Josie Maran’s Daily Sun Protection SPF 40 with Argan Oil ($ 32.00)
Anna Griffin, founder and Editor-in-Chief of Coco Eco Magazine, recommends this intense moisturizer from Josie Maran. (Skin Deep rating not available.) Containing some organic ingredients, this product is free of parabens and fragrance.  It's an extremely hydrating product that is lightweight and fast absorbing.

Chanel Haute-Couture , Natalie Portman’s Baby Name and Emma Watson Promotes Harry Potter

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:06 PM PDT

By Chloe Schneider

In the city of love, Chanel Haute Couture showed off their Fall/Winter collection that, naturally, attracted a jaw-dropping front row. We check out what the stars wore for the event.
Natalie Portman has finally revealed the name of her baby! Read on to find out what this very genetically blessed baby is called and why.
It might not be glam but we are super excited about the new Harry Potter film. We check out what the gorgeous Emma Watson and the rest of the Harry Potter crew wore to their London photo call.

Chanel Haute Couture
Where there’s Chanel, there are stars and the Tuesday Paris Fashion Week showing of the luxe brand’s Fall-Winter Haute Couture collection is no exception.
Chanel’s loyal fans Alexa Chung, Julia Roitfeld, Diane Kruger, Milla Jovovich, Elle Fanning and more were all watching on as the models walked a twinkling asphalt path in dark, slightly masculine pieces.
Sheer stockings, boots and lace-veiled outfits completed the looks at which Kruger commented, “Classic—right?”
There was a bit of a monochrome theme on the night with the stunning Diane Kruger wore a streamlined grey and white piece from Chanel, of course, while fashionista Alexa Chung sported a black and white piece from the ready to wear Fall/Winter 2010/11 collection.
Elle Fanning, who’s proving to be quite the style icon already, wore a sweet Chanel knee-length white dress with an enviable collection of Chanel white gold and diamonds. We love that Elle never tries to pull off dresses that are too old for her; she always looks stylish but age-appropriate.

Natalie Portman’s Baby Boy’s Name Revealed
The delightful Miss Portman and her fiancé Benjamin Millepied have finally put an end to the suspense and announced their baby boy’s name!
Keeping in the tradition of unusual celeb baby names, this mini star is called Aleph. Why, you ask? Aleph is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and is number one in Hebrew.
We’re yet to see any pictures of Naralie, Benjamin or baby Aleph since his birth in mid-June so it’s nice to hear this little bit of information from the talented family!

Harry Potter Fever
We won’t lie, we love Harry Potter! We can’t wait for the new film and have loved watching cast member Emma Watson go from geeky Hermoine Granger to talented, respected actress and fashionista.
The incredibly stylish Miss Watson and her co-stars Rupert Grint and Tom Felton made an appearance in London yesterday for their first ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II’ photo call.
Emma wore a seriously magical black lace belt accessorised with a black belt and black pumps. As is generally her style, the frock was young and fun but still classy. She always manages to strike that perfect balance!
The 21 year old and her co-stars are set for a huge week with the film headed towards the UK premiere tomorrow.
Unfortunately, we have to wait until July 13th to get our fix!

Helena Bonham Carter Bombs at the Red Carpet

Posted: 07 Jul 2011 10:06 PM PDT

Helena Bonham Carter is adorably cute, and we all agree to that. Even when she toys around with playful, eccentric styles, she’s still cute. But when she goes on to wear fashion bombs such as as this green and pink ensemble, we think she needs the fashion police.

At the red carpet premiere of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” the Brit actress had her curls in an updo through a cute pink floral headpiece, but unfortunately she matched the faux pas flower with a pine green disaster and black heels. The overall result was a big mess, and we’re wishing she just wore a Barbie gown to the fete.
