EcoSalon Exclusive! Alima Pure Eyeshadow Gift Offer from Saffron Rouge

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 02:03 AM PDT

This feature and special offer are proudly sponsored by Saffron Rouge.

Editor’s note: EcoSalon is fully FTC compliant. We will always disclose sponsored editorials to you.

ExclusiveSaffron Rouge and Alima Pure debut Obsidian, an exclusive eyeshadow just for EcoSalon readers.

When organic beauty shop Saffron Rouge told EcoSalon that they wanted to work with Alima Pure to create an exclusive eyeshadow for us, we were more than thrilled to participate and of course, to let our readers know about the line. From Manhattan to Cape Cod, we’ve been on the green scene and meeting up with organic makeup stylists who have taken the time to try out the line. Our talented artists were able to transform even two busy editors into lovely-lidded ladies. Check it out!

Our first stop was to eco-boutique Kaight, trendy mecca for sustainable shoppers in New York, where we met up with green friends and Green Beauty Team founder and award-winning runway makeup artist, Kristen Arnett. Arnett made us over on the shop couch (thanks to Kaight’s fabulous founder and owner, Kate McGregor for sharing the space!). Arnett created different looks for us to show how well the shadow works for day and night. She demonstrated a natural, fresh look on DuFault and a just-a-little punk night look on Ost. (See the slideshow below for close-ups.)

EcoSalon Managing Editor Amy DuFault (left), and Editor-in-Chief Sara Ost get made over by Green Beauty Team Founder, Kristen Arnett.

On Cape Cod, where Managing Editor Amy DuFault hails, we headed over to local hot spot, Salon Belor and met up with makeup stylist Sara Gilman and our model Dena Papi for some more takes on the Obsidian/Pink Coral duo.

Model Dena Papi gets her eyes and lips Pink Coralized.

A satin matte shadow, Alima Pure is created with lush mineral pigments and can be applied wet, resulting in an intense eye liner, or applied dry over the lid to add color and warmth (see the slideshow to watch it transform). We loved the combination of the Pink Coral with the Obsidian and how they could interchange for day to night depending on how it was applied. We also were amazed to see that the Pink Coral could be used wet as a lip gloss.

EcoSalon’s exclusive color, Obsidian, we found to be a wonderfully, shimmery dark grey-brown that makes a gorgeously dramatic shadow and can pull double duty as a liner. And the color works well on all skin tones. Thanks to Alima and our sponsor Saffron Rouge, the spring to summer trend of muted darks and nudes as well as bright corals are a perfect accessory to everything from citrus frocks to neutral dresses.

Considering themselves color as much as fashion junkies, Alima says their reasoning behind choosing our exclusive color was based on being avid readers and realizing our audience is stylish and sophisticated but that there’s “Enough whimsy and playfulness on the pages of EcoSalon to know that a little sparkly fun is not out of the question!”

View the slideshow below to catch behind-the-scenes shots of our fun makeover journey.

Lustables: Bax by The Sway

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 10:04 PM PDT

White hot and in your hand.

Ever notice how men function so well without purses? (Excepting the murse-toting denizens of Brooklyn, Silverlake and other hipster hangouts). It’s an enviable mystery. Sunglasses, wallet, iPhone, keys – where do these things go? How do they do it? I don’t know, but I do know I’m tired of the obligatory lady tote. White is always perfect for spring – and a liberating little clutch feels just right, right now. Bax by The Sway is one hot ticket.

$ 235. Available at Kaight.

Look for Lustables daily at EcoSalon. 100% gorgeous green finds, and never sponsored. Submit your favorite to tips@ecosalon.com.

Best Place To Find The Right Bob Haircut 2011 For Ladies

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 10:04 PM PDT

The Bob hairstyle has been with us since 1910 and yet this favorite of all hairstyles keeps evolving and adapting to our tastes and needs. Short haircuts are popular because they make your features the center of attention. If you have a strong jaw, show it off with a bob that hits you at the jawbone. Make sure and angle the bob hairstyle so it's shorter in back than in front.  Varying age, face shapes, and level of desired maintenance are all things that help the stylist decide which of the bob hairstyles will fit the individual the best.

Fashion Commentator Glynis Traill-Nash Offers The Low-Down On Winter Must-Have The Blazer, How To Wear Loafers, Alannah Hill’s New Online Store And A Supermodel’s Timeless Style

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 10:03 PM PDT

Alannah Online

Fans of Alannah Hill’s particular brand of feminine frivolity will be thrilled to hear that the Melbourne-based designer has just launched an online store. The autumn/winter collection can now be snapped up at www.alannahhill.com.au/shop, and it’s currently offering free shipping to anywhere in Australia just to add to the enticement. Deliveries will, naturally, arrive in a beautiful beribboned box.

Blazing A Trail

With the weather turning to winter (yay!), it’s time to start layering up. A key item for this autumn/winter is the blazer—if you haven’t had one previously, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one once it’s in your wardrobe. There are plenty of colour options currently available, from classic black and navy through to white and cream, via poppy shades of red and orange or go-with-anything beige. To get good mileage out of this item, choose a colour that is going to play nice with the other pieces in your wardrobe. And also choose a streamlined shape that is flattering to your shape. One button is enough, and brings the eyeline in to the waist, but there are multiple-button options out there if you prefer. There are others without fastenings, designed to hang loose at the front. You’ll wear a great blazer with everything—it will ground a pretty dress or dress up jeans and a tee for a casual work outfit. It slots right into the whole androgynous style with trousers and lace-up shoes, or can be thrown over a printed maxidress and wedges. Many Australian designers have blazers in their current collections—try Camilla and Marc, Life With Bird, Fernando Frisoni Manning Cartell, Scanlan & Theodore and Little Joe—as well as high street brands such as Cue, Portmans, Country Road and Sportsgirl (pictured).

Supermodel Chic

Christy Turlington shows off her style credentials yet again and highlights why deep blue and black is still such a winning combination. The embellished jacket updates what could have otherwise been quite a vintage look, but overall this look also taps into the ladylike trend, with the full knee-length skirt and ankle-strap shoes. The simple clutch is a winner, as are the tied-back hair and minimal make-up. Effortless chic.

Loafing Around

Here’s a quick lesson in how to wear loafers, and it’s not just about man-style chic or the whole androgynous look. Style maven Alexa Chung wore black penny loafers late last year with this gorgeously feminine Chanel dress. Anyone else would probably have paired a dress like this with delicate heels or a classic pump. Not Alexa. She knows how to mix and match her styles in an unexpected way. The matte leather envelope clutch is also a little at odds with the dress, with its sheer panel and floral details. As a whole it comes across as cool and not at all overdone. That’s just one more option for your favourite new flats.

Boris Bidjan Boots, New Origin of Lights Shades

Posted: 18 Apr 2011 06:01 PM PDT

boris bidjan boots 01 horz Boris Bidjan Boots, New Origin of Lights Shades
Remember when the Origins of Lights sunglasses were sold out all over, and I managed to finally hunt them down? Now Oki-Ni has the Chronicles of Never sunglasses in the tortoiseshell frames that were pretty hard to locate before, plus an excellent pair of boots from Boris Bidjan to add to the mix. Neither are cheap, but both I covet immensely. Quality is king; you’ll have to be ready to pay for it.

The Boris Bidjan Saberi Ankle Boots are one of the best examples of investing in quality, considering they top $ 1,500 and look amazing with a curved sole and artfully-mussed cowhide leather. When boots look this intriguing without a foot in them, you know they look show-stoppingly good while worn. I was staring at the pics of these ankle boots and wondering what makes them look so nice: I guess that’s premium-quality material for you. Made in Spain from oil-tumbled leather, these boots have an oversized zipper and a tattered heel tab. I squealed a little when I saw the hammered sole and topsy-turvy appeal, but I’d have to really save up to get these for someone. What’s your shoe investment cutoff? [boots are $ 1,690.00 at oki-ni; glasses are $ 447]

The Talladega Polo By Billy Reid

The Talldega Polo By Billy Reid The Talladega Polo By Billy Reid

Maybe you’re lucky enough to be heading down to Florence, Alabama the first weekend in June for a party known as The Shindig; for the past two years, Billy Reid (the guy and his company) throws this weekend-long bash for friends and family that’s filled with live music, good food, boating and booze. If you’re not on the coveted guest list and feel like crashing, well, perhaps something from the Billy Reid collection might help you gain access to a weekend of southern-fried fun.

It’s going to be toasty down south in June so the Talladega Polo – new for spring from Billy Reid – is going to serve you well. Cut trim in pique cotton with contrast stitching detail, the Talladega Polo features cotton sheeting on the placket and under the collar.

Four natural mother of pearl buttons line the placket. The shirt is available in four colors: red, white, light blue and navy. Becasue the polo is cut trim, they recommend jumping up a size for a looser fit. The polos are available from small to xx-large.

There is a ton of great apparel and accessories over at BillyReid.com, so it’s worth a look; everything caught my eye, but the suit jackets, sweaters and t-shirts definitely stood out. [via uncrate]
