looRachel Nichols Sexy Covergirl for Maxim (August 2011)
Rachel Nichols looks absolutely dashing on the sands in the Maxim, August 2011 issue. The beautiful actress went from playing the Green Girl back in 2009, in J.?J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek to looking pretty slick in sandals and robes as co-star in Conan the Barbarian in just three years’ time. In regard to her playing pretty violent roles lately, Rachel said she wasn’t always “ass-kicking and gym-going” but her roles in G. I. Jane and Alias were quite challenging so she started whipping into shape (and what a lovely shape that is). The Hollywood hottie said she can’t wait to star opposite Matthew McConaughey in a romantic comedy, she’s love to soften up in a romantic role. Canada’s sustainable fashion growth is a healthy sign of the times.
With easily more than 50 Canadian designers now working various sustainable practices into their collections, it was difficult to highlight just these five. Canada has seen tremendous growth in the number of eco fashion designers over the past few years. The following designers represent both those who have been leading the movement in Canada, and also some up-and-comers that you should be watching. Their A/W 2011 collections are sure to impress even the most discerning.
Nicole was the first winner of Canada’s Fashion Takes Action award, Design Forward. Her A/W ’11 collection is entitled “Safe to Love,” aptly named after a personal experience she recently had. “Every season I reflect on life lessons that I’m learning”, Bridger says of coming out of a painful relationship. In addition to earth tones, we can expect to see passionate colours from Bridger this fall including reds, purples, and blush pink.
Continuing on the theme of consciousness, Thieves’ A/W 2011 is entitled “Reflection,” which according to designer den Elzen is the embodiment of seasons layered and loved. “It is about the seasons and years blending together, erasing the lines of time and offering genuine lifelong pieces that become the foundation of a wardrobe for those who are reflective and conscientious of their surroundings.”
This fall, we can expect to see more of the highly tailored look den Elzen achieves with beeswaxed organic cotton and hemp/wool/tencel suiting blends, combined with soft draped jerseys, organic wool knits, and lush, hand-knit wear.
Newer to the scene but becoming known for their use of reclaimed and recycled materials, Adhesif recently rocked the runways at Vancouver Eco Fashion Week . For A/W 2011, we can expect to see more vintage tweed, wool suiting and printed cotton twill.
“The colour palette reminds me of a sunset on an open field in the Prairies,” states designer Melissa Ferreira. “Many pieces have a draped feel to them but I have added in some pieces that have a ‘sack’ or box-cut look as well”.
For more than two decades, luxury fur designer Mariouche Gagné has been ethically recycling fur made in Canada. She claims to have recycled over 50,000 coats, saving 400 metric tons from landfill. The Harricana A/W 2011 collection features three themes: Femme Fatale, giving rise to elegance and femininity; Military, urban, unisex and streamlined; and Timeless, evoking the wild and untamed nature of the great Canadian outdoors.
Since 2008, designer Melanie Ferrara has produced a series of vintage-inspired modern classics, made in Toronto using tencel, organic wool and organic cotton. For inspiration for her A/W ’11 collection, she looked to the period of the 1940s. “Fashion at that time was influenced by wartime austerity measures, and was characterized by tailored silhouettes with an emphasis on the waist and shoulders,” says Ferrara who adds she used a neutral color palette of navy and black as the base, paired with greys, cream, plum and plaid. “The result is a collection of timeless, wearable pieces which range in style from modern casual to sophisticated elegance.”

The pair, with a huge 18 year age gap, have been spotted together and word is they have been seeing one another for a few months now. This news comes off the back of Lovato’s split from Wilmer Valderrama and news of Ryan Phillipe’s split from Amanda Seyfried and the birth of daughter Kai, with Alexis Knapp. Kai is Phillipe’s third child and we’re wondering how the still teenage Lovato could handle being stepmum to the trio!
We’re entering that no-man’s land of season crossover, when that winter chill still hangs in the air but the stores are starting to fill up with pieces for spring. No matter. Over the next few weeks we’ll cover off some great trends that will see you through to the end of winter and become firm favourites for spring…
Lace
Lace was a major textile trend for winter and is still looking good for summer. When left to the likes of Dolce & Gabbana, black lace becomes the epitome of sexy; use it in white for a wedding dress and it’s pure romance (just ask Kate Middleton). Lace also takes on boho beautifully (GailElliott knows all about that for her Little Joe Woman label), and even works on accessories—lace clutches and shoes work a treat. Given the texture and “busyness” of the textile, keep shapes simple: a sheath just like this example from David Lawrence (left); or a long-sleeved ’70s-style shift dress (look for jagged hem versions at Friend of Mine); a shell top, or a stretch tee from MelaPurdie; even more tailored pieces such as a blazer can work beautifully, as Lanvin’s fall show proved. Aside from black and white, a number of labels are offering colourful lace pieces come spring. Maurie & Eve have bright blue playsuits and ochre dresses, while Manning Cartell have mustard-coloured open-weave overdresses. And of course Lover sent out bold red lace at Australian Fashion Week. And depending on your preference, you can either opt for chunky cotton laces, or more delicate varieties, better suited to more feminine styles. And if you’re very brave, why not try out lace trousers like those we saw from Zimmermann at RAFW. Just be sure to keep your smalls on the big side.
Lacy Lady
Speaking of lace, here is a sublime red carpet moment featuring the delicate textile. Rose Byrne pulled off a very tricky tonal stunt at the Damages Season 4 premiere in New York. The sheer Valentino Fall 2011 dress is beautifully detailed with lace trims criss-crossed alongside floral appliqués. From the glossy brown locks, plummy brown lips and dress, Byrne is a vision of autumnal beauty. The silver trim shoes just give the right amount of lift to the ensemble. Nothing damaged here.
La IsolaBonita
It seems almost perverse to be shopping for swimwear with the temperature still so low, but perhaps you’re lucky enough to be jetting off to warmer climes soon. If so, Megan Gale’s latest Isolaswimwear collection hits stores this week, and it just keeps on getting better. The first drop is filled with bold florals and a black-and-white “confettit” spot print (left). You’ll find flattering one-pieces and tankinis, as well as bikinis proper with—thank all that is good—tops and bottoms sold separately, and there’s a great selection of shapes, including moulded tops and ’50s-style bottoms. Just add water.
In shopping, we all are out for the same thing; quality at the minimal prices possible. Just like adult shoes, kids shoes are essential and form part of our lives as we need to protect our children who are more vulnerable to risks during their play times.
Marc Jacobs Spring Summer 2012 campaign seems to preview a very strong mix of the two. With more conservative items like knit cardigans with contrast piping and shrunken, gold-buttoned blazers mixing seamlessly with shiny waxed pants, nontraditional drawstring-detailed trousers and (literally) gold-plated oxfords – the lookbook offered here is one of Jacobs' strongest in recent memory.
